The XLR-11 rocket motor, developed by Reaction Motors Inc., was the first liquid-fueled rocket engine used by the United States Air Force. It played a critical role in the Bell X-1 aircraft, which achieved the first supersonic flight in 1947. With four combustion chambers, the XLR-11 could produce a total thrust of 6,000 pounds, and its pioneering design laid the groundwork for future advancements in rocket propulsion technology.
