About the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp

The R-2800 was an 18-cylinder, twin-row radial engine displacing 2,804 cubic inches (46.0 L) and producing up to 2,500 horsepower in later variants. It powered many of the war’s most iconic aircraft, including:

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt – Excelling in bomber escort and ground attack roles.
Vought F4U Corsair – The premier carrier-based fighter of the Pacific Theater.
Grumman F6F Hellcat – Responsible for more aerial victories than any other Allied aircraft.
Martin B-26 Marauder & Douglas A-26 Invader – Key medium bombers that relied on the R-2800’s performance.

More than 125,000 R-2800 engines were produced during the war, cementing its legacy as one of the most important aircraft engines of all time. Its power, durability, and adaptability helped the Allies dominate the skies and secure victory in both the European and Pacific Theaters.

Check Your References!

  • R-2800-59 versions are for Late P-47D Bubbletops. This version features the GE Turtleback magnetos
  • R-2800-21 versions are for P-47D Razorbacks. This version features the Bendix Scintilla ignition with separate central dual-magneto
This version is specific to P-47D and may not be correct P-47M/N models.

Miniart Basic Kit Users: Order the basic version—the advanced version will not fit due to intake/exhaust interference.

Miniart Advanced Kit Users: Choose either version:

For a closed cowl: The basic version is sufficient.
For an open or closed cowl: The advanced version includes extra intake and exhaust details for the highest level of realism.

Tamiya Kit Users: Order the -21 or -59 depending on the version of the kit you're building. Generally, the -21 is correct for the Razorback and the -59 is correct for the Bubbletop.

The P-47M and P-47N use the "C" version of the R-2800 which is a totally different cylinders and crankcase. This engine would not be correct for the M or N.

For Tamiya version, the kit parts can be used to permit a rotating prop.

The advanced mount is included in Miniart’s advanced boxing, while basic kits come only with a flat plate basic mount. To use the advanced engine, you must use the advanced mount from the advanced boxing of the kit.

This is the Miniart advanced mount. If you have the Miniart advanced kit you can use this mount with the advanced version of the engine. If you have the basic kit you do not get this mount, so only choose the basic version
