About the Pratt & Whitney R-2800-59 Double Wasp

The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp was one of the most powerful and reliable radial engines of World War II. This 18-cylinder, twin-row radial engine displaced 2,804 cubic inches (46.0 L) and produced up to 2,500 horsepower in its later variants. The R-2800 powered some of the most famous aircraft of the war, including:

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt – The heaviest single-engine fighter of the war, excelling in both bomber escort and ground attack roles.
Vought F4U Corsair – The premier carrier-based fighter of the Pacific Theater, known for its speed, durability, and kill ratio.
Grumman F6F Hellcat – The U.S. Navy’s dominant fighter, responsible for more aerial victories than any other Allied aircraft.
Martin B-26 Marauder & Douglas A-26 Invader – Key medium bombers that relied on the R-2800’s reliability and performance.

More than 125,000 R-2800 engines were produced during the war, cementing its legacy as one of the most important aircraft engines of all time. Its power, durability, and adaptability helped the Allies dominate the skies and secure victory in both the European and Pacific Theaters.

Fitment Notes:

Check Your References! This version is specific to Late P-47D Bubbletops and may not be correct for earlier P-47D Razorbacks or P-47M/N models.

  • Basic Kit Users: Order the basic version—the advanced version will not fit due to intake/exhaust interference.

    Basic mount left, advanced right.
  • Advanced Kit Users: Choose either version:

For a closed cowl: The basic version is sufficient.

For an open or closed cowl: The advanced version includes extra intake and exhaust details for the highest level of realism.

This is the advanced mount. The advanced kit comes with both this mount and also the basic mount. The basic kit only has the basic (flat plate) mount. To use the advanced engine you must use the advanced mount from the advanced boxing of the kit.

Other R-2800 variants coming soon—stay tuned for more releases including other versions, and fitments for Tamiya 1/48 F4U and P-47, Eduard Hellcat, and 1/32 versions!
